FAQ

What is the HoS Lock™?

The HoS Lock™ is our signature, multi-award-winning sculptural clasp — the foundation of every House of Sól piece. It connects pearls, gemstones, and necklaces, letting you click pieces in and out to create entirely new combinations from a single Lock.

What sizes and finishes are available?

The Lock comes in two sizes — Statement and Mini — and multiple finishes: 14K yellow gold, 14K white gold, gold vermeil, black rhodium, diamond-set, and colored enamel editions. Check out more in our HoS Lock page.

Is the Lock durable?

The Lock is precision-engineered for daily wear and tested for thousands of open-close cycles. To preserve the mechanism, press the button when both opening and closing the Lock arms. This retracts the internal tongue, protecting the small ridges that keep the Lock securely fastened.

Can I add charms?

Yes — charms click directly onto the Lock, adding another dimension of personalization.

Materials

What metal do you use?

All pieces are available in solid 14K gold (yellow, white, or rose) and 24K gold vermeil.

What is 24K gold vermeil?

Vermeil (pronounced "ver-MAY") is a legally regulated term in the United States, defined by the Federal Trade Commission. To qualify as vermeil, a piece must meet three strict requirements: the base must be 925 sterling silver, the gold layer must be at least 2.5 microns thick, and the gold used must be at least 10 karats.

At House of Sól, we go beyond the minimum. Every piece in our collection is crafted with 24K pure gold — the highest karat possible — over 925 sterling silver, with a gold layer of 2.5 microns. This means you're wearing real gold with genuine substance, not a whisper-thin coating that fades after a few wears. The result is jewelry with the warmth, depth, and luster of fine gold, built on a precious metal foundation designed to last.

What is the difference between vermeil and traditional gold plating?

The difference comes down to what's underneath and how much gold is actually there.

Traditional gold plating applies a very thin layer of gold — often less than 0.5 microns — over a base metal like brass or copper. There are no legal standards governing the thickness, and the base metal has no inherent value. Over time, the plating wears away, sometimes revealing a greenish or dark layer beneath.

Vermeil is held to a higher standard entirely. The base is always 925 sterling silver — a precious metal in its own right — and the gold layer must be at least five times thicker than standard plating. Because House of Sól uses 24K gold at 2.5 microns, our vermeil pieces maintain their rich, warm tone significantly longer than plated alternatives.

How long does vermeil last? Can it be replated?

With proper care, your vermeil piece is designed to be a companion for years to come. The 2.5-micron gold layer is built for daily wear — not just special occasions. And when the time feels right for a refresh, our replating service will restore it to its original glow.

How do I care for my vermeil jewelry?

After each wear, gently wipe your piece with a soft cotton cloth to remove any traces of perfume, moisture, or natural oils from your skin. This simple habit makes a real difference.

Because vermeil is built on a 925 sterling silver base, the metal can oxidize when exposed to air over time. Minimizing that exposure is the single most effective way to extend the life of your gold layer. This is exactly why we include airtight pouches — in both large and small sizes — with every order. We recommend storing your Lock and your necklace separately, each in its own pouch, to prevent scratching and keep air contact to a minimum.

Are your pearls real?

Yes — we use genuine cultured freshwater and baroque pearls. Each pearl is unique in shape, luster, and character.

Where are House of Sól pieces made?

Every piece is designed in New York and handcrafted in Istanbul by master artisans in the Grand Bazaar — one of the world's oldest and most storied centers of goldsmithing. Our atelier partners carry generations of metalwork expertise, working with techniques that have been refined over centuries in the same workshops where Ottoman court jewelers once practiced their craft.

Because each piece is made to order, nothing sits in mass inventory. Your jewelry is shaped, assembled, and finished by hand specifically for you — from metal casting and pearl setting to the final polish. This is not scaled production with a handmade label. It is one artisan, one piece, one order at a time.

Orders & Shipping

How long does production take?

Every piece is handmade to order — production takes approximately two to three weeks. For special occasions where timing matters, we do accept rush orders. Reach out to clientcare@thehouseofsol.com with your date, and we'll do our best to accommodate.

What about shipping?

We offer complimentary express shipping worldwide. US orders arrive within 2–3 business days after production, with no additional customs or import fees — applicable state sales tax is calculated at checkout.

International orders arrive within 3–7 business days. Customs duties on international orders, where applicable, are the responsibility of the recipient.

Does my order come gift-ready?

Yes. Every House of Sól order is packaged for gifting — no wrapping needed. Each piece arrives in a pouch made from kutnu — a centuries-old handwoven silk fabric once reserved for Ottoman sultans and palace garments. Still produced by a handful of master weavers in Türkiye, kutnu is as much a textile heritage as it is a material. We chose it because it reflects the same philosophy as our jewelry: rooted in craft, made by hand, impossible to mass-produce. Your piece is presented in our signature box alongside a coffee table book that tells the story behind the collection. Whether you're buying for yourself or someone else, the experience feels intentional from the moment the box is opened. You can explore our unboxing experience in more detail here.

Order Tracking

How do I track my order?

Once your piece ships, you'll receive a tracking number via email. If you don't see it, check your spam or promotions folder — shipping notifications sometimes land there. You can also check your order status through your account dashboard, or email us at clientcare@thehouseofsol.com anytime.

Sizing & Styling

How do I choose the right necklace length?

Our standard lengths are designed to work beautifully on most frames. If you have a longer, shorter, or wider neckline that calls for something specific, we offer complimentary custom sizing on every order — just let us know at checkout or during your styling session.

I don't know where to start.

Take our Find Your HoS quiz — a few questions and we'll match you with the right Lock, finish, and first pieces. Or book a complimentary 25-minute styling session for personalized guidance.
